This innovative nose guard patented in 1891 by S. J. Cumnock of Lowell, Mass., was intended to protect the nose, forehead and mouth of a person playing football or a similar sport. The mask was made of rubber with an interior flange, which was clasped between the teeth. The band encircled the head beneath a soft helmet. Used by the first CU football teams, the nose guards were featured on early Boulder postcards of team members.

Celebrate CU’s entry into the Pac-12 by joining us on the road this fall for our spectacular away game weekend festivities in Washington, California and Arizona.

Venture northwest for our Forever Buffs pregame at the University of Washington on Saturday, Oct. 15. We’ve scouted out Seattle to help you navigate this beautiful city, which rests in the shadow of 14,411-foot Mt. Rainier. Take advantage of its cultural and culinary gems when you’re not cheering on the Buffs.

If you can’t make it to Seattle, join us at our other Pac-12 away pregame parties — Stanford on Oct. 8, Arizona State on Oct. 29, UCLA on Nov. 19 and Utah on Nov. 25.

Go to www.cualum.org/football for details.

What to do in Seattle

Shop and eat in Pike Place Market, the nation’s oldest continuously working public market. www.pikeplacemarket.org

Catch views from the Space Needle, Seattle’s 606-foot-tall icon, and the Bank of America Tower observation deck, which is twice as tall. www.spaceneedle.com

Stroll University Way, referred to as “the Ave.,” with three cinemas, coffeehouses and the University Bookstore. www.bookstore.washington.edu

Check out Seattle visitor information at www.visitseattle.org.

Tailgate by boat

Fans steer their boats close to Husky Stadium, one of the nation’s loudest stadiums because of its size and architecture. On game weekends upwards of 12,000 people float next to the stadium, which overlooks Lake Washington.

Celebrate at our pregame

Meet other Forever Buffs and enjoy great food at our pregame party. It starts two-and-a-half hours before the game. There will be multiple pregames in “The Zone,” the practice field east of Husky Stadium, so look for the black and gold.
